Aung M. Naing Wins 2009 Southeast Asia Heritage Award, USA
Aung Min Naing, the president and co-founder of the Network of Myanmar American Association (NetMAA), was the recipient of a 2009 Heritage Award in recognition of his dedicated services to the Southeast Asian communities of Southern California. The Aquarium of the Pacific in California awarded him the Heritage Award on the 5th Annual Southeast Asia day held on Saturday, October 3, 2009.
NetMAA is a non-profit organization that serves the Myanmar community and promotes the art and culture of Myanmar, also known as Burma. Because of Mr. Naing’s initiation and devotion to the Myanmar community with countless volunteer hours, younger generations of Myanmar Americans who have become detached from Burmese culture can be reconnected with their heritage.
Under his leadership, NetMAA has been able to provide many annual community outreach programs including Myanmar arts and culture events, a Myanmar film festival, photo exhibitions, and benefit music concerts. Mr. Naing has also been assisting many Burmese immigrants through the Asian Pacific American Legal Center by helping them to meet U.S. Immigration and Citizenship guidelines. He has also provided educational workshops to help new arrivals. He has proven to be an excellent community leader and a grateful asset to Asian American communities. He cares deeply about the Myanmar (Burmese) American community development, challenges, and progress.
Mr. Naing currently serves on the Myanmar Arts Council at the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena. He also serves as the Chairman of the Burmese Complete Count Committee (BCCC), a partnership with the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau.
He is a Transportation Engineer for the California Department of Transportation with over 10 years of state and local government experience in engineering, planning, and administrative management. He graduated from the University of California of Los Angeles (UCLA) with a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He is a member of the Professional Engineers in California Government Organization (PECG).
