The Lady movie at centerpiece gala presentation of the 25th American Film Institute Film Festival
AFI FEST 2011 presented by Audi will take place November 3 – 10, 2011 in Hollywood, California at the historic Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the Chinese 6 Theatres at the Hollywood & Highland Center, the Egyptian Theatre of the American Cinematheque, and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
THE LADY is the extraordinary story of Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize winner at the core of Burma’s democracy movement, and her husband, Michael Aris. Michelle Yeoh (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON) gives a quietly riveting performance as Suu Kyi. Equally impressive is David Thewlis (NAKED), in the dual roles of Michael Aris and his twin brother Anthony. Despite distance, long separations, and a dangerously hostile regime, Suu Kyi and Aris’ love endures until the very end. THE LADY was written over a period of three years by Rebecca Frayn. Interviews with key figures in Aung San Suu Kyi’s entourage enabled Frayn to reconstruct for the first time the true story of Burma’s national heroine. Directed by international auteur Luc Besson, THE LADY is both a sweeping portrait of one of the most powerful political conflicts of the modern age and an intimate glimpse into a tender, touching marriage.
